High School Band
Membership Requirement
For a student to participate in KMEA honor groups the sponsoring teacher must be an active member of the Kansas Music Educators Association.

High School Band Audition Excerpts

2022-23

Participation Eligibility Requirements
There are two requirements for a student to be eligible to audition for the SWKMEA High School Band:
  1. The student's director must be a member of KMEA, will register each audition online, and send the Audition Invoice with appropriate payment to the SWKMEA Executive Director. These must be completed by the deadline established by SWKMEA.
  2. The student must be deemed an eligible freshman, sophomore, junior, or senior in good standing in their high school.
Music Requirements for the Recorded Audition
  1. A Chromatic scale slurred up and tongued down. Quarter Note MM=60. Play the rhythm as indicated on the scale sheet.
    NEW for 2022-23 - A scale sheet link is provided indicating articulation and range for each scale, via the KMEA link at the top of this page (corrected files were posted June 1, 2022)
  2. Unison Etude: A unison etude will be uploaded after July 1, 2022. Perform the entire etude at the prescribed tempo indication.
  3. Sections of the required etudes/solos listed below. Excerpts taken from the KMEA State Band audition material.

Piccolo
Selected Studies for Flute, H. Voxman, Rubank/Hal Leonard (#4470700). Play page 38, Ab Major etude, first three lines, ending on the quarter rest in measure 12. Students should play measures 11 and 12 up an octave to avoid the range problem with the low Db and C.

Flute
Suite in A-Minor, Telemann, published by International Music Co. (2260). Play the No. 3 "Air a I'Italien" movement. Start at the beginning of the solo in measure 5, play to the quarter note on beat one in measure 13.

Oboe
Concerto in C for Oboe and Orchestra, attributed to Haydn, edited by Rothwell, published by Oxford University Press (# 3642131) (#9780193851627). Second movement: page 6, play from the beginning to the end of the 4th line. (same as state excerpt)

Bassoon
Concertpiece, Op. 35, Gabriel Pierné, edited by Schubert-Garfield, published by International Music Co. (1617) Play from letter A to letter C. (same as state excerpt)

B-Flat Soprano Clarinet
Concerto No. 2 in E-Flat Major, Op. 74, Carl Maria von Weber, published by Carl Fischer (CU-752). Polacca movement: play beginning to letter A, ending on the quarter note on beat one of measure 16.

B-flat Bass Clarinet; also E-flat and B-flat Contra Bass Clarinet
Adagio and Allegro, Johann Ernest Galliard, arr. by Lyle Merriman, published by Southern Music Co. (SS-686). (Hal Leonard 3774337). II: Allegro from Sonata No. V, play from the beginning to letter C.

Saxophones (Alto, Tenor, Baritone)
27 Virtuoso Studies by Bassi, transcribed for Oboe and Sax by Gerardo Iasilli, published by Carl Fischer (O-61). #1, page 4: play 3rd line from the top to the 2nd measure of line 8, ending on the first note of the measure, 16th note G.

B-flat Cornet and Trumpet

French Horn

Percussionists may audition in one or more areas, but a separate form and payment must be submitted for each audition area. Percussionists are encouraged to audition on more than one instrument, but not required to.

Timpani
Solo Timpanist, Vic Firth, published by Carl Fischer (#04402), Etude #1, page 4. Play beginning to the end of measure 16.

Mallets
Masterpieces for Marimba, arr. by Thomas McMillan, Pro Art Publications (1202). Sonatina by Telemann, page 6. Play the first 4 lines, no repeat.

Snare Drum
