High School Band Audition Excerpts


Participation Eligibility Requirements
There are two requirements for a student to be eligible to audition for the SWKMEA High School Band:
  1. The student's director must be a member of KMEA, will register each audition online, and send the Audition Invoice with appropriate payment to the SWKMEA Executive Director. These must be completed by the deadline established by SWKMEA.
  2. The student must be deemed an eligible freshman, sophomore, junior, or senior in good standing in their high school.
Music Requirements for the Recorded Audition
  1. A full range chromatic scale slurred up and tongued down. Quarter Note MM=120. Memorization is not required. *winds only*
  2. Sections of the required etudes/solos listed below. *winds & all percussion*
  3. SWKMEA Unison Etude *winds & mallets only*. Directors may contact the chair to receive a copy.
  • Seven Sonatas and Preludes by G. F. Handel, Carl Fischer (CU149), Sonata No. III (pp. 6-7) Adagio, complete movement (4 lines)
  • SWKMEA Unison Etude
  • "Polonaise and Badinerie" from Suite in B Minor by J.S. Bach in Concert and Contest Collection for C Flute; edited by H. Voxman, published by Hal Leonard. (HL04471610); Play the entire "Polonaise" movement (p. 18) without repeats. Don't play any 1st endings and don't repeat any sections. End on the fermata quarter note B-natural in the last measure of the page (don't take the DC).

  • Sonata No. 2 by G. F. Handel, Carl Fischer (CU1385), Larghetto (p. 4) play complete movement (6 lines)

  • Premier Solo by E. Bourdeau, edited by Voxman, published by Rubank (04476934): Play from the beginning of the solo to the "Plus vite" on the 1st page (end on low C).

B♭ Soprano Clarinet
  • Concerto for Clarinet in B-flat by Mozart, Op. 107, K. 622. Revised and arranged by Simeon Bellison (Carl Fischer, W1668). 2nd movement, Adagio: p. 9, play from (B) to (D) (mm. 34-55). 3 measures before D in the Adagio Mvmt the F should be played as a D (added 11/7/2012). Use metronome markings as indicated. Corrections: Section B of the Adagio; 5th measure after (C), the next to last 16th note should be an F; 9th measure after (C), the last three 16th notes should be F, E, D; 10th measure after (C), the eighth note should be C.

  • Concert and Contest Collection, Rubank/Hal Leonard (HL04471650), Divertissement in B-flat, F. J. Haydn (pp. 14-15), play complete Adagio with no repeats (don't play 1st ending; just take the 2nd ending and end on the C eighth note).

  • Lamento by L. Bassi, edited by H. Voxman, published by Rubank (Hal Leonard 04476889), listed as a Bass Clarinet solo: start at the beginning, and play to Piu Mosso, five measures before (4).

  • Sonata by Henri Eccles, arr. by Siguard Rascher, listed as an Alto Saxophone solo. (Theodore Presser 164-00047): Play all of movement one (I)-Largo (4 lines).

  • Concert Etude, Opus 49, by Alexander Goedicke. Hal Leonard (HL00121835): Play from measure 32 (#3) and end on the first note of measure 60 (#6). Play the final note as a quarter note. Measure 40, 2nd and 3rd notes should be A and B (added 5/14/2015).

  • Horn Concerto No. 1 in E-flat major, Opus 11, Richard Strauss, publishers: International (1715) or Carl Fischer (Cu750): 1st movement, Allegro; Play from the start of the 7th line (solo, m. 76), and end on the D quarter note in the 3rd measure of the top line of the second page (m. 110). As indicated, quarter note MM-112.

Trombone and Euphonium
  • Andante et allegro, J. Guy-Ropartz, arr. by A. Shapiro (Carl Fischer CU573): Andante - play from the beginning to the end of the 5th line (end on the "g").

  • Variations on the Theme of "Judas Maccabeus" by G.F. Handel, Ludwig Beethoven, arr. by William Bell (Carl Fischer, W1644). Variation III: play from the beginning (measure 9) to the rest (measure 16).

Percussionists may audition in one or more areas, but a separate form and payment must be submitted for each audition area.

  • The Solo Timpanist by Vic Firth, published by Carl Fischer (04402): Etude X (10), p. 21, play only m. 13 through all of m. 20 (end on the F quarter note in m. 20), quarter note MM=112. Also Etude XI (11), p. 23, play from beginning and stop at the 2/2 (play m. 1 - 23), dotted half note MM=69
  • Masterpieces For Marimba, arr. by Thomas McMillan, Pro Art Publications (PR0BK01202): Sonata by Archangelo Corelli pp. 16-17, play from the beginning to letter A (end on the "rolled" F half note).
  • SWKMEA Unison Etude
Snare Drum
  • Portraits in Rhythm, Anthony J. Cirone, 50 Studies for Snare Drum (Belwin Mills, HAB00101): Exercise #13, p. 15, play from the Allegro con brio in m. 5 and stop at the fermata before the Trio in m. 22 (5 lines). Also Exercise #4, p. 6, play from m. 22 (pp) to the end of the solo (last 6 lines).
