Jay Gilbert
Jay W. Gilbert is a Professor Emeritus of Music at Doane University in Crete, Nebraska. In 2022, he retired after 42 years of teaching. During his 29-year tenure at Doane, he led the Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, and Tiger Pep Band and directed the Blue River Community Band for twelve years. He also served as chair of Doane’s Music department for 24 years. He remains active as a guest conductor and clinician throughout the United States and Canada and has enjoyed international recognition as a composer and arranger. Jay was a contributing author to The Art of the Interpretation of Band Music and a contributing scholar to the Teaching Music Through Performance in Band series.
Dr. Gilbert received recognition from Doane, including the Outstanding Teacher of the Year by the Student Congress and the Zenon Hansen Leadership Award for his outstanding contributions to the institution. He received multiple distinguished service awards from the Nebraska State Bandmasters Association and the Nebraska Music Educators Association and special recognition from the Kansas State University Band program. Jay also served as President of the Alpha Theta chapter of Phi Beta Mu.
