HS Band - Selection Guidelines

Page  4-D-1
Updated: July 3, 2007

The District High School Band is selected by taped audition. Each High School director will be notified in the bulletin of the date of the concert, the clinician, and the date that the roster forms and audition tapes are due. Audition materials change on a three-year cycle and that cycle and the audition materials for each instrument are listed below and on the following pages taken from the KMEA state wind & percussion audition excerpts.

THE HIGH SCHOOL BAND CHAIR MUST RECEIVE THE ROSTER FORM BY THE "ROSTER DUE DATE."
Band directors submitting their student roster after the "roster deadline date"
will be required to pay double the registration fee for each of their students selected.
The minimum amount for this late penalty will be $50.00.

It is the director's responsibility to select qualified students from their school, provide the audition material, tape the student's audition, and send the completed audition tapes along with the second copy of the completed roster form to the High School Band Chair by the "audition tapes due date." Directors may either mail their tapes or hand deliver them on the day the tapes are judged. The Chair will arrange for other directors to listen to and rate the tapes based on the guidelines listed below. Judging will be held on the same day as the District Middle School Clinic.

Directors will be notified ASAP of the District Band personnel and should begin to rehearse the music so their students will have a positive experience on the day of the concert.

Information for the KMEA State Festival Band will also be included in the bulletin and is not listed in this notebook linked from the SWKMEA website. However, students and directors must be aware that if a student is planning to audition for the KMEA State band, they are required to participate in their KMEA district band rehearsals and concert. Only 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students are eligible to audition for the KMEA State band.
